If a particular page on a site doesn't load for some reason or in case a link is not working, the visitor shall see an error page with a generic message. The page will have nothing in common with the rest of the website, which may make the visitor leave the site. A possible solution in such a case is a function offered by some website hosting companies - the ability to set up your own customized error pages which shall have the exact same design as your Internet site and which may contain any images or text that you would like depending on the particular error. There are 4 popular errors that can take place and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your world-wide web browser sends a bad request to the server and it can't be processed; 401, if you're supposed to log in to see a page, but you haven't done this yet; 403, if you do not have a permission to see a specific page; and 404, if a link that you have clicked leads to a file which doesn't exist. In any of these scenarios, website visitors shall be able to see your custom made content instead of a generic error page.

Custom Error Pages in Shared Hosting

You can set up custom made error pages for any of your sites with ease when you use any of our shared hosting service. This can be done through the Hosted Domains part of the Hepsia Control Panel, provided with all accounts and once you go there, you could set your custom made pages independently for any domain or subdomain. You have to upload the files to your account before you start and enter the links to them during the process. This feature can be de-activated anytime and the options you shall be able to to pick from are a conventional page from our system or a default Apache web server page. Tailor-made error pages may be set with an .htaccess file too. The file should be placed in the domain or subdomain folder and it should incorporate some system code and links to the pages. If you're not tech-savvy, you can copy the entire content you'll need for the file from our Help section.

Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Servers

All our semi-dedicated servers support custom error pages, so you will be able to employ this feature for any domain or subdomain hosted inside your account. All it takes to do this is to go to the Hosted Domains section of the Hepsia Control Panel, to click the Edit button linked to the particular domain/subdomain and then to type in the link to the custom file. You could do this independently for every error type. You shall be able to switch back to a standard error page anytime if required and the change shall take effect immediately. A different way to achieve the same result is to set an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder related to the Internet site that you would like to change and to input a couple of lines of code inside it. If you want to try this method, you can copy and paste the needed code from our Knowledge Base article on custom error pages, hence you won't need any coding skills or prior experience.
